David Mayman MD

David Mayman, MD, completed his undergraduate studies in human kinesiology at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario. His medical degree, residency in orthopaedic surgery, and postgraduate training in orthopaedic trauma were obtained at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. During this time, he won the coveted William Ersil award for Best Paper in Orthopaedics three times for research primarily concerned with computer-assisted surgery. This continues to be one of his top research interests. Dr. Mayman next completed the arthroplasty fellowship at Hospital for Special Surgery. He went on to do a fellowship in orthopaedic sports medicine through Harvard University at Massachusetts General Hospital. While there, he participated in the care of a number of professional and college sports teams.

He is interested in patient-centered care of arthritic and pre-arthritic conditions of the hip and knee, maintaining or restoring desired activity levels in patients of all ages, and the clinical application of computer-navigation technologies.

Research Description

Dr. Mayman has been researching the development and advancement of computer navigation techniques for hip and knee surgery since his residency and has continued working as a consultant in the design of computer navigation tools. He focuses in two main areas biomechanics of the knee and hip and the prevention and treatment of arthritis. In collaboration with our biomechanics department, he has worked to establish a robotic study protocol designed to investigate the biomechanical and functional outcomes for total hip and total knee arthroplasty. More recently, he has established a 3-dimensional imaging protocol using a new imaging technology and computer modeling that have enabled us to investigate pre-operative and post-operative planning that decreases radiation doses from standard radiographs. His primary focus is the prevention and treatment of arthritis with a focus on incorporating new technologies to help treat my patients and improve clinical outcomes. He won the coveted William Ersil award three times for Best Paper in Orthopedics, focusing on research primarily concerned with computer-assisted surgery. He is currently researching the long-term outcome of computer-assisted surgery to that of conventionally-guided surgery and is also working on protocols for maintaining the balance of ligaments in joints with a Hospital for Special Surgery fellow.
