Margaret Braddock - Hip Replacement
In 2015, I went to see an orthopedic surgeon because I was having pain in my right leg that I could not pinpoint or explain. I am a police detective and had been training for, and ultimately rode in, the Police Unity Tour (a 300 mile annual ride that continues over 4 days to raise awareness for law enforcement officers who lose their lives in the line of duty). It was the second time I had completed the ride, and had not had any pain after the first tour. I thought I had simply over-trained. When the physician told me that I had arthritis and needed a hip replacement, I was in disbelief. I was 48 years old and thought I was far too young to need my hip replaced. I live in the suburbs of New York City, and felt that I had to go to HSS for a second opinion. Dr. David Mayman was highly recommended to me by a colleague who had a total hip replacement performed. As soon as I met Dr. Mayman, I knew he was the right surgeon for me. His knowledge, experience and confidence put me at ease. I told him that my goal was to be able to ride in the Police Unity Tour again. He assured me that this was a goal that I could attain. I had my THR surgery January 6, 2017. I was riding a stationary bicycle six weeks later. From May 9 to May 13, 2017, I rode my bicycle the 300 miles from New Jersey to the National Police Memorial in Washington, D. C. I had no pain! In fact, my hip felt better and stronger with each passing day. No one could believe that I had a total hip replacement four months earlier. Having the surgery, and choosing Dr. David Mayman and HSS was the best decision I could have made. I feel like I have my life back and that there are no limits to what I can do.
